Joanna "Jo" (Stone) Thaxton

August 23, 1933 ~ May 17, 2018 (age 84)

Anniston – Funeral service for Mrs. Joanna “Jo” Thaxton, 84, will be held on Monday, May 21, 2018 at 12 noon at Anniston Memorial Funeral Home with Rev.  Mike Owens officiating. Burial will be held in Maple Grove Cemetery following the service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, one hour prior to the service, on Monday. Mrs. Thaxton went to her heavenly home on Thursday, May 17, 2018. Mrs. Thaxton is survived by her three children, Joni Thaxton (Forney) Russ of Eastaboga, Bill Thaxton of Oxford and Tim (Kathey) Thaxton of Saks; six grandchildren, Colby Russ, Kathryn Russ, Jordan (Morgan) Acton, Jennifer Thaxton (Stephen) Wilson, Jessica Thaxton and Alison (Chance) Moore; four great-grandchildren, Benjamin Wilson, Madison Wilson, Austin Moore and Mattie Moore; three sisters, Bertha (Joe) Davis of Westminster, SC, Mabel Bennett of McDonough, GA and Kate Brown of Conyers, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Thaxton was born in Monticello, GA to the late Harvey Pierce Stone and Eula Clyde Blackwell Stone. She resided in Anniston most of her life and attended Leatherwood Baptist Church. Mrs. Thaxton was very involved in church activities at Leatherwood, along with attending Bible Studies and serving as a Greeter. She volunteered much of her time helping with Meals on Wheels and working at the Baptist Service Center. Mrs. Thaxton retired from the State of Alabama where she worked within the Public Health Department. She was a loving mother, devoted Mammy and loyal sister. Mrs. Thaxton enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to Leatherwood Baptist Church, 2709 Old Gadsden Highway, Anniston, AL 36206. Mrs. Thaxton was preceded in death by her husband, William Riley Thaxton; four sisters, Lucille McMichael, Margaret Thompson, Eula Neal and Carolyn Ussery; and three brothers, J.W. Stone, Hollis Stone and James Stone.
